Auston Matthews scored his sixth goal of the season at 2:32 of overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the visiting Calgary Flames 2-1 on Friday night.

Matthews, who had been stopped on a breakaway earlier in the overtime period, carried the puck through the neutral zone before firing a shot from the top edge of the right circle.

Ondrej Kase also scored and William Nylander added two assists for the Maple Leafs, who have won seven of their past eight games.

Oliver Kylington scored for the Flames and also was foiled on a superb stop by Jack Campbell, who made 30 saves.

Dan Vladar kept the Flames in the game, stopping 35 shots in his third game of the season and the eighth of his career.

The Flames have lost three in a row, including a 4-2 defeat on Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens that opened a seven-game road trip.

Nylander could not control the puck on a breakaway and shot wide at 19:44 of the first period.

The Maple Leafs, who had only one shot on goal during their first power play in the opening period, also had a man-advantage for the first 1:57 of the second period.

Toronto had three shots on this power play, including one from the right circle by Matthews that forced a good save by Vladar. The Leafs returned to the power play for a third time in the sixth minute of the second, but were held to two shots.

Late in the second period, Vladar again foiled Nylander, who made a clever play to move into the low slot. Soon after, Matthews had his nifty attempt deflected by Vladar.

Kylington scored his second goal of the season on a give-and-go with Johnny Gaudreau at 4:55 of the third period.

Nylander was originally credited with the game-tying goal at 12:54 on a snipe from the right circle, but it was changed to Kase, who deflected the incoming puck at the goalfront above Vladar's right shoulder.

Jake Muzzin hit a goal post at 15:18 in a short-handed attempt during Calgary's first power play of the game.
