Todd Gurley rushed for two touchdowns and a career-best 208 yards as the visiting Los Angeles Rams remained undefeated, holding on for a 23-20 victory Sunday afternoon over the Denver Broncos.
The Rams improved to 6-0, their best start since the 2001 St. Louis Rams won their first six games on their way to a berth in Super Bowl XXXVI.
Rams quarterback Jared Goff was 14 of 28 for 201 yards but did not have a TD pass, posting modest numbers during one of the coldest October games in Broncos history. With temperatures at 23 degrees at kickoff, it was the coldest October game at Denver since 1969.
The Rams elected to lean heavily on Gurley, who had 28 carries and well over two-thirds of the teams' 270 total rushing yards. He also caught two passes for 17 yards.
Broncos quarterback Case Keenum was 25 of 41 for 322 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Denver dropped its fourth consecutive game after opening the season 2-0. Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders caught seven passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.
After first-quarter drives of 63 and 71 yards, the Rams were forced to settle for a pair of Cairo Santos field goals to take a 6-0 lead. The Broncos remained close in the opening quarter, getting a 28-yard field goal from Brandon McManus.
Gurley scored his first touchdown in the second quarter, blasting through the left side of the Broncos' line for a 10-yard score on a fourth-and-1 play. Gurley added his second touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. Santos' extra point gave the Rams a 20-3 lead.
Keenum cut into the deficit when he hit Sanders on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter. McManus' extra point pulled the Broncos within 20-10.
McManus' 24-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter brought Denver within 20-13. However, the Rams went 72 yards on 13 plays, eating up 5:39 off the clock, culminating in a 21-yard field goal from Santos to give them a 23-13 lead.
Keenum hit Demaryius Thomas on a 1-yard TD pass with 1:22 remaining for the final score.
The Broncos' defense sacked Goff five times, the most the Rams' quarterback has been sacked in a game this season. But it was the second consecutive week the Broncos allowed a 200-yard rusher after the New York Jets' Isaiah Crowell had 219 yards one week earlier.
The Rams are now the last unbeaten team in the NFL after Kansas City Chiefs lost 43-40 to the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., on Sunday night.
