Washington Redskins holder Hunter Smith bobbled the snap on a potential game-tying extra point in a steady downpour, handing the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers a gift-wrapped 17-16 victory on Sunday.
Donovan McNabb hit Santana Moss for a 6-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal with nine seconds to play, bringing on Graham Gano for what should be an routine extra point.
However, the snap was high and it slipped out of Smith’s grasp.
Tampa Bay (8-5) then recovered the ensuing onside kick and took a knee, securing its eighth straight win over teams with records below .500.
The Buccaneers took a 15-10 lead on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Josh Freeman to Kellen Winslow with 3:47 left. Freeman converted the ensuing two-point conversion by bulldozing his way into the end zone.
The Redskins (5-8) wasted a huge day from Ryan Torain, who ran for a career-high 173 yards on 24 carries, including a franchise-record 158 in the first half.
