Greg Williams Jr. scored 14 of his game-high 21 points during a decisive run spanning the halves on Sunday, lifting St. John's to an 89-66 win over Stony Brook in New York.
Julian Champagnie scored 16 points and Isaih Moore added 12 for St. John's (4-1), which trailed upset-minded Stony Brook for much of the first half. The Red Storm, however, went on a 34-4 run that lasted almost nine minutes.
Mouhamadou Gueye scored 15 points while Frankie Policelli had a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) for Stony Brook (1-2). Juan Felix Rodriguez had 11 points and Jaden Sayles finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Stony Brook, which didn't practice Saturday following a 72-69 overtime win over Fairfield on Friday, started off fast. The Seawolves opened up a pair of six-point leads during a 16-10 run that included seven points by Rodriguez and ended with a jumper by Sayles to extend the advantage to 33-27.
But the Red Storm took control by ending the half on a 22-2 run in which they held Stony Brook scoreless from the field on its final 11 possessions. Williams drained back-to-back jumpers to tie the score before Moore put St. John's ahead for good by hitting one of two free throws.
Dylan Addae-Wusu hit a jumper before Rodriguez briefly slowed St. John's by hitting two free throws to pull Stony Brook within 36-35. But Williams converted off an offensive rebound and drained a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions to begin a half-ending 13-0 run that concluded with Marcellus Earlington's buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
St. John's ended any hopes of a Stony Brook comeback by scoring the first eight points of the second half, when Moore sandwiched a dunk around 3-pointers by Champagnie and Williams. Sayles hit a jumper before Williams' jumper and Champagnie's dunk extended the Red Storm's lead to 61-37.
Stony Brook got no closer than 16 the rest of the way and St. John's led by as many as 25 as it improved to 9-0 all-time against the Seawolves.
