Obi Toppin scored 25 points and Jalen Crutcher added 20 as Dayton rode a stifling defense to an 80-61 rout of Georgia in Monday's opening-round matchup in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Dayton (4-0) advances to the Maui Invitational semifinals on Tuesday to face Virginia Tech, which upset No. 3 Michigan State. The Spartans will meet Georgia (4-1) in the consolation bracket.
The Flyers held Georgia to just 4-of-16 shooting from beyond the 3-point line and forced 23 turnovers, which Dayton turned into 22 points. Fourteen of those came in the first half.
The Flyers' aggressive defense set the tone early, as the team jumped to a double-point lead before the first media timeout.
Rodney Chatman, who finished with nine points, scored the game's second basket off one of his two steals, and Dayton was off to the races from there.
Georgia, which came into the Maui Invitational shooting just 30.8 percent from 3-point range through its first four games, did its comeback effort no favors with 0-of-7 shooting from deep before halftime. Georgia also committed 15 turnovers in the first half.
The Bulldogs were unable to trim the gap into single digits after falling behind early. Their 61 points were 21 fewer than the next-lowest scoring game in through their first four, an 82-78 win over Georgia Tech on Nov. 20.
Tye Fagan was the long Bulldog to score in double figures. He recorded 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor.
Georgia's scoring woes extended to the free throw line, where it shot just 9-of-17 on the afternoon. Dayton, in contrast, went 16-of-19 from the foul line.
Toppin was a perfect 5-of-5 on his free throws, and missed just twice from the floor. He scored 11 of the Flyers' first 13 points.
Crutcher complemented Toppin's dominant play in the paint with a solid game on the perimeter, knocking down 4-of-9 3-pointers and dishing a game-high three assists.
