Davon Reed scored 18 points to lead four Hurricanes in double figures as Miami pulled away in the second half for a 74-68 victory over Virginia Tech on Wednesday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes (16-7, 6-5 ACC) outscored the Hokies (16-7, 5-6 ACC) by 17 points from the field but went to the foul line only 13 times, making nine, while the visitors were 20 of 25 from the stripe.

Justin Robinson led Virginia Tech with 15 points. Chris Clarke added 13, guard Ahmad Hill 12, and Zach LeDay and Seth Allen had 10 each.

Ja'Quan Newton scored 16, Anthony Lawrence 12 and Kamari Murphy 10 for Miami.

The Hurricanes broke from a 47-47 tie by outscoring the Hokies 20-3 over a nine-minute stretch to assume a 67-50 lead, their largest of the game, at the 4:29 mark. Virginia Tech got within 71-65 on Allen's three free throws, but only 13.7 seconds remained.

The teams played on even terms in the first half until the Hurricanes went on a 9-0 spurt over the last minute and a half to take a 40-34 lead into the locker room.

Reed and Lawrence canned back-to-back 3-pointers, and Newton got the final three points on a layup and free throw at with 29.1 seconds left.

Both teams shot well the first half with Miami going 17 of 32 (53.1 percent) against Virginia Tech's zone. The Hokies were 11 of 21 (52.4 percent) from the field and had a big advantage at the free-throw line. The Hokies were 9 of 10 from the stripe while the Hurricanes got there only three times, making only one.

The Hurricanes extended their run to 12-0 at the start of the second half on forward Dewan Huell's free throw and Newton's reverse layup before Clarke got Virginia Tech back on the board with a pair of free throws at the 17:48 mark.

The Hokies didn't get their first field goal of the second half until nearly five minutes into the period when LeDay dropped in a little floater in the lane to make it 47-42 Miami. That ignited a spurt that saw the Hokies pull even at 47-47 before Murphy responded with back-to-back dunks.

For the game, Virginia Tech shot 47.8 percent and Miami shot 45.3 percent.
