Zach LeDay finished with a double-double and Virginia Tech cruised to an 80-67 victory over Maine at Cassell Colisuem on Friday.

LeDay had eight points and six rebounds by halftime, at which point the Hokies (1-0) had a 39-29 lead. The senior forward, who averaged 15.5 points per game a year ago, finished with 20 points and 12 boards.

Guard Ahmad Hill, who sat out the 2015-16 season after undergoing knee surgery, added 14 points for Virginia Tech in his return to the court. G Justin Robinson had 13 points and G/F Chris Clarke finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

This was a marked improvement from Virginia Tech's season opener a year ago, when it fell to Alabama State 85-82. The Hokies left little to chance this time around. It broke a 13-13 tie with an 11-0 first-half run, and the Black Bears (0-1) never got closer than seven the rest of the way. Tech led by 25 points with just over three minutes to play before Maine closed on a 12-0 run to make the final score more respectable.

Guard Wesley Myers had 18 points for Maine (0-1) and was the only Black Bear player in double figures. Maine was outrebounded 44-36 and shot just 35.8 percent from the floor. Starting guards Aaron Calixte and Ilker Er combined to shoot 4-for-20. Freshman G Dennis Ashley did provide a late spark in garbage time, knocking down both of his 3-point attempts in the final minutes.
