Yante Maten and J.J. Frazier combined for 37 points, and Georgia bounced back from an opening game loss by knocking off UNC-Asheville 60-46 Monday in a CBE Hall of Fame Classic game at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.
Maten scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots, and Frazier finished with 18 points, six assists and five rebounds for the host Bulldogs, who dropped their opener to Clemson.
UNC-Asheville hung tough and cut the Georgia lead to 46-41 on a layup from Raekwon Miller with 9:12 to play. But Georgia answered the challenge with a 11-2 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Frazier and four straight points from Maten, as the lead grew to 14 with 5:16 to play.
Junior guard Ahmad Thomas led UNC-Asheville with 13 points and six rebounds, and freshman guard MaCio Teague added 11 points for the visiting Bulldogs, who fell to 0-2 on the early season.
Maten showed extended range with a 3-pointer off an assist from Frazier, igniting a 7-0 run to close out the first half. Frazier had 11 in the first half, and the Bulldogs led 33-26 at halftime.
Georgia owned the glass, outrebounding UNC-Asheville 45-29, and took advantage of its opportunities at the foul line. Junior guard Juwan Parker had nine points and seven rebounds for coach Mark Fox's Bulldogs, who are expected to contend in the SEC. Georgia made 10 of 11 free-throw attempts.
