The Gamecocks remain the only undefeated SEC team and are ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 2003-04, when they finished at No. 23.
Durand Johnson, a graduate swingman, had 16 points and freshman guard Federico Mussini scored 12 on 5 of 14 shooting for St. John's (7-6), which has dropped three straight since beating Syracuse and six of 10.
The Red Storm made only 12 of 27 free throws and were outrebounded 45-31.
Johnson's layup with 13:57 to play in the first half put the Red Storm up 13-7, but the Gamecocks used a 24-6 run to take a 12-point lead before entering halftime up 40-34.
