Senior guard Denzel Valentine collected 13 points, eight rebounds and nine assists and center Matt Costello supplied 15 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans. Senior guard Bryn Forbes added 12 points.

Sophomore center C.J. Turman's 15 points led Florida Atlantic, which finished 9-20 last season. Freshman guard Nick Rutherford and senior point guard Jackson Trapp chipped in 10 points apiece.

The 6-foot-10 Davis, a McDonald's All-American, scored on a tip-in for his first basket during the 16-0 run, as the Spartans grabbed a 43-21 halftime lead. Costello, who had a team-high 11 first-half points, finished off the outburst with a three-point play for a 20-4 lead.

Rutherford ended the Owls' 6:41 scoreless drought with a jumper. But the Spartans' lead grew to as much as 25 during the half on a Valentine's 3-pointer to make it 41-16.

The Owls never got closer than 17 in the second half.

The Spartans have won 36 of their last 39 openers and are 99-18 all-time in home openers.
