Hampton 74, Manhattan 64: Quinton Chievous recorded 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Pirates defeated the Jaspers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Dayton, Ohio.
Chievous went 7-of-12 from the field before leaving with an ankle injury late in the game and Reginald Johnson also scored 15 for 16th-seed Hampton (17-17). Brian Darden had 13 points while Deron Powers dished out seven assists for the Pirates, who play top-seeded Kentucky in the second round of the Midwest Regional on Thursday in Louisville, Ky.
Shane Richards led the way with 17 points while making only 4-of-14 from behind the arc for fellow 16th-seed Manhattan (19-14). Emmy Andujar chipped in with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and Ashton Pankey added nine points and seven boards for the Jaspers, who shot 37.1 percent from the field and turned the ball over 17 times.
Chievous recorded 11 points as Hampton led by as many as a dozen in the first half, but Manhattan scored eight of the final 11 to close within 38-31 at intermission. The Jaspers shot 33.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes before starting fast in the second half with 14 of the first 22 points, capped by Pankey’s basket to pull within 46-45 with 13:50 to go.
Johnson scored six as Hampton responded with 10 of the next 15, and after Powers and Darden hit back-to-back jumpers the lead swelled to 62-52 with 5:45 left. Manhattan cut the deficit to 62-58, but turned the ball over four times in the next 2½ minutes and Emmanuel Okoroba made two big buckets for a 67-58 edge with 1:30 before the Pirates held off a late rally.
GAME NOTEBOOK: G Dwight Meikle, Hampton’s leading scorer and rebounder, missed his fourth consecutive game with an ankle injury. … The Pirates are 2-3 in their four trips to the NCAA Tournament, gaining their other victory against Iowa State in 2001. … Andujar and Pankey, who combined to average 30 points and shoot better than 50 percent from the field coming in, made only 8-of-23 while battling foul trouble throughout.
