No. 17 Iowa State 77, No. 15 Oklahoma 70: Georges
Niang scored 20 of his team-high 23 points in the second half as the Cyclones
matched a program record in overcoming a 21-point deficit to stun the visiting
Sooners.
Monte Morris added 19 points - 17 in the
final 20 minutes - for Iowa State (21-8, 11-6 Big 12), which closed out the
contest with a 59-31 run after trailing 39-18 with 19 minutes to play and pulled into a second-place tie with Oklahoma in the conference. The
Cyclones, who also received 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench
from Jameel McKay, shot 58.3 percent from the field, including 6-of-11
3-pointers, in the second half to snap a two-game losing streak.
Buddy Hield had 26 points, including four
3-pointers, to pace Oklahoma (20-9, 11-6), which had won eight of its previous
nine games but went 8:49 without a field goal during the middle of the second
half. Isaiah Cousins added 12 points, and Jordan
Woodard had 10 for the Sooners, who shot 32.1 percent from the floor and were
outrebounded 28-16 over the final 20 minutes.
Oklahoma led 37-18 at the break and matched
its biggest lead on a Hield bucket a minute into the second half. But immediately following
a taunting technical foul on Cousins with 14:55 remaining, the Cyclones scored
the ensuing 22 points to turn a 48-28 deficit into a 50-48 lead – their first
of the game – and never trailed again.
Oklahoma took command immediately out of the gate,
jumping out to a 7-0 lead. Iowa State pulled within 19-14 with 9:17 left in
the half, but the Sooners reeled off the next 11 points as part of an 18-4 run
to take a 37-18 lead into the break and marking the Cyclones’ lowest-scoring
opening half of the season.
