Delaware State kept things close in an entertaining first half, seizing a 27-24 lead on Gray's layup off a Konstantinos Mitoglou turnover with 8:35 remaining. Mitoglou made amends with four straight points to put the Demon Deacons ahead, and Aaron Rountree III added a transition dunk a short time later as Wake Forest entered the intermission with a 38-36 lead.

Williams gave the Hornets a major boost early in the second half, reeling off seven points during a 10-3 run that gave his team a four-point edge. The lead grew to as many as seven points before the Wake Forest defense helped make a game of it, holding Delaware State scoreless for more than three minutes to close within a point before three-point plays from Gray and May in the final 1:01 put the game away.
