No. 25 Virginia 61, James Madison 41: Anthony Gill led a balanced offensive attack with 13 points and the Cavaliers defense stifled James Madison in a one-sided victory over the visiting Dukes.

Gill made all five of his field-goal attempts to pace the 25th-ranked Cavaliers (1-0), who held James Madison to 31.3 percent from the field. Mike Tobey had 10 points, Malcolm Brogdon added nine and Darion Atkins chipped in eight in the win.

Tom Vodanovich scored 11 points for James Madison (0-1), which was outrebounded 45-27 and turned the ball over 13 times. Ron Curry and Charles Cooke added nine points apiece in defeat.

The Cavaliers jumped all over the visitors from the get-go, opening up a 13-5 lead on Gill's layup just 3:36 into the game. Akil Mitchell's three-point play extended the advantage to double digits late in the period, and Virginia limited the Dukes to 20.8 percent from the field en route to a 32-14 halftime lead.

Gill's layup less than two minutes into the second half stretched the edge to 21, and James Madison followed with a four-minute scoreless stretch during which Virginia forced four turnovers. An emphatic Tobey dunk put the Cavaliers up 48-23 near the midway point of the half, and Virginia cruised from there.
