D.J. Newbill collected 23 points, 12 rebounds and five assists as the host Nittany Lions closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with their fourth straight win.

Sasa Borovnjak added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Nick Colella went 5-of-7 from 3-point range off the bench for Penn State (8-4), which opens up Big Ten play at Wisconsin on Thursday.

Sean Johnson scored 19 points and Quevyn Winters chipped in 14 off the bench for the Dukes (7-7), who have dropped back-to-back games and three of the last four.

Newbill recorded 11 points and seven boards in the first half as the Nittany Lions grabbed a 39-28 lead at the break. Duquesne endured a field goal drought of 6:26 early in the second half, allowing Penn state to extend the lead to 67-46 with 9:35 to play.

The Dukes cut the deficit to 79-74 on Winters’ 3-pointer with 56 seconds left but missed their final three field goal attempts. Newbill and Akosa Maduegbunam combined to hit five free throws in the final 39 seconds to seal the win.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Duquesne opens Atlantic 10 play at Fordham on Wednesday. … Penn State dominated the glass, outrebounding the Dukes 46-23. … Duquesne leading scorer Derrick Colter had 13 points on 3-of-9 shooting and handed out five assists.
