No. 8 Florida 58, Savannah State 40: Patric Young recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds and a career-best six blocks as the Gators cruised past the visiting Tigers.

Mike Rosario added 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half to ignite a 9-0 run that pushed the lead to 21 points for Florida. The Gators (4-0) forced 20 turnovers and made it tough for Savannah State (3-3) to get good shots all night.

Erik Murphy chipped in with 10 points for Florida, which scored 15 of the game’s first 17 points. Leading scorer Kenny Boynton had just five points before injuring his ankle with 13:23 left in the game. The senior returned to the bench, but did not play again.

The Gators struggled a bit from the field in the first half, but were able to build a 24-4 lead with their defense. Savannah State responded with 10 points in the final 3:36 to pull within 28-14 at halftime. Young had eight points and seven rebounds in opening 20 minutes for Florida.

Rashad Hassan and Cedric Smith had 11 points apiece to lead Savannah State. Arnold Louis added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Savannah State made just three of its first 21 shots from the field. … Florida is 105-6 against non-conference opponents at home over the last 12 seasons. … Savannah State won the MEAC regular-season title last season and was picked first in the 2012-13 preseason poll.
