Elston Turner hit a jumper with six seconds left, helping No. 18 Texas A&M scrape past St. John’s 58-57 in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday at Madison Square Garden.

The Aggies (3-1) led for all but one minute of the game but fell behind 57-56 on Moe Harkless’ free throw with 21 seconds remaining. That led to Texas A&M’s final possession, which looked out of sorts until Turner grabbed the ball, dribbled toward the right elbow and sunk the game-winner.

On the ensuing possession, St. John’s point guard Nurideen Lindsey sprinted up the court and was fouled by Ray Turner with 2.3 seconds left, but Lindsey missed both free throws.

Ray Turner had 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting for Texas A&M, which avoided dropping its second straight game after getting upset by Mississippi State on Thursday. Both he and fellow big man David Loubeau fouled out, as the Aggies had all kinds of trouble keeping from sending the Red Storm to the line.

St. John’s (3-2) shot 35 more free throws than the Aggies (38-3), accounting for 20 more points. But the Red Storm needed just a couple more makes to come away with the upset.

Lindsey had 12 points on 8-of-16 free throw shooting for St. John’s. D’Angelo Harrison also scored 12.

Texas A&M led 32-30 at halftime and went on a quick 8-0 run to open the second half, capped by Jordan Green’s breakaway dunk.

St. John’s went without a field goal for an 8 ½-minute stretch in the second half but then awakened with an 11-4 run, taking its first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by Lindsey with 4:23 left.
