Lenzelle Smith Jr. erupted for a career-high 28 points and helped Ohio State avenge a New Year’s Eve upset loss with a 80-63 victory over Indiana at Value City Arena on Sunday.
Ohio State (16-3) extended its home winning streak to 36 games – the third longest streak in the nation.
Indiana (15-3) has dropped back-to-back outings and lost for the 51st time in its 85 trips to Columbus.
After losing to Indiana 74-70 in Assembly Hall on Dec. 31, Ohio State was fueled by revenge putting the game out of reach early on. The Buckeyes' defense didn’t give the Hoosiers an inch, forcing 16 turnovers – 12 of those coming in the first half. That helped Ohio State build a 35-14 halftime lead.
Smith did damage everywhere, including knocking down four 3-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds. Forward Jared Sullinger added 16 points and pulled in nine rebounds, overcoming a poor performance in his first meeting with Indiana.
The Hoosiers, the country’s best 3-point shooting team, started to heat up from beyond the arc midway through the second half, trimming the lead to as low as 16 points. Indiana went six for 15 from the perimeter.
Indiana freshman star Cody Zeller scored 16 points while Christian Watford chipped in with 13 in the loss.
