Troy Daniels led four players in double figures with 17 points and Virginia Commonwealth’s defense keyed an early second-half run for a 69-46 victory over visiting South Florida on Wednesday.

VCU started the second half with a 16-3 run, making three 3-pointers – two by Daniels – to take a 44-31 lead. VCU cruised from there, as USF made just one of its first 11 shots to start the second half.

Bradford Burgess recorded 15 points, including 13 in the second half. Darius Theus added 13 and Rob Brandenberg 10 for VCU (4-3), which made 10-of-24 from 3-point range.

Ron Anderson Jr. led South Florida (5-3) with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Neither team could build more than a four-point lead in the first half and USF’s Toarlyn Fitzpatrick made a layup in the final seconds to tie it 28-28 at halftime.

Theus made 4-of-5 from the field in the first 20 minutes to lead VCU with nine points. Victor Rudd, who made three 3-pointers, and Anderson had nine points each to lead USF in the first half.

USF’s second-leading scorer Augustus Gilchrist missed his third straight game with a shoulder injury. It’s possible Gilchrist could play at No. 14 Kansas on Saturday.
