Rakim Sanders scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the first half as Fairfield posted a 55-44 victory over Arizona State in Thursday’s first round of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Ryan Olander added 11 points for the Stags (3-2), who face Dayton in Friday’s semifinals.

Fairfield led Arizona State (1-3) from the outset and forced 22 turnovers while beating a Pac-12 team for just the second time in six opportunities.

Trent Lockett led the Sun Devils with 15 points.

The Stags led 43-24 on Maurice Barrow’s layup with 11:03 remaining. Arizona State responded with its best stretch of the game, outscoring Fairfield 18-6 over the next nine minutes to cut its deficit to 49-42.

Olander then drained a 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining and Derek Needham added two free throws 36 seconds later.

Fairfield started and finished the first half with a flourish. The Stags scored the game’s first seven points and led 16-7 less than nine minutes into the contest.

Arizona State used an 8-0 spurt to pull within 18-17 with 3:13 left, but Fairfield outscored the Sun Devils 13-2 the rest of the half to take a 31-19 lead.

Arizona State faces Wake Forest in a consolation bracket contest Friday.
