Casey Mitchell and Kevin Jones combined for 47 points to lead West Virginia to an 82-66 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Saturday.

Mitchell scored 25 points and Jones had 22 for the Mountaineers (4-1).

Sparked by the play of Mitchell and Jones, West Virginia led 38-30 at the half. Mitchell scored 14 points and Jones added 11 in the opening 20 minutes.

Mitchell and Jones kept at it on the offensive end in the second half, and finished as the only two Mountaineers in double figures.

West Virginia also clamped down on defense, holding VMI to 33 percent shooting from the field (23 for 70), including 9 for from the arc.

The Keydets (5-1) were off to one of their best starts in nearly a century as they last started 5-0 in 1921-22.

Keith Gabriel and Rodney Glasgow scored 18 points apiece, and Austin Kenon scored 12 for VMI. Gabriel was 7 for 22 from the field, including 1 for 8 from the arc.
