After losing twice in two days last week to ranked teams, Maryland returned home Tuesday night and rediscovered its winning ways.

The Terps pulled away from Delaware State in the final 10 minutes of the first half, en route to a 72-54 victory.

Maryland (4-2) won its first three games of the season, with two victories coming by 29 points or more. But after tough losses to No. 4 Pitt (79-70) and No. 16 Illinois (80-76) in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic last week, the Terps took out their frustrations on the overmatched Hornets.

Ahead 12-10 midway through the first half, Maryland ripped off a 28-11 run to build a 40-21 halftime lead. Cliff Tucker scored seven points during the run, and Pe’Shon Howard and Berend Weijs came off the bench with six points each during the surge.

Delaware State closed within 44-30 early in the second half before Maryland got hot again, scoring 16 of the next 21 points to take a 60-35 lead on James Padgett’s two free throws with 12:18 to go.

Tucker led the Terps with 15 points, hitting 6-of-7 attempts from the field. Dino Gregory added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Adrian Bowie scored 11 points.

Jay Threatt led the Hornets (1-1) with 15 points. Delaware State had not played in 10 days, since a season-opening victory over Washington Adventist.

Maryland plays host to Elon on Friday, while Delaware State faces Philadelphia Biblical on Friday.
