Maalik Wayns scored 17 points to lead host Villanova to an easy 84-47 win over Marist on Tuesday in first-round action from the preseason NIT.

Marist (0-1) hopes to recover from last year's 1-29 mark, but was no match for Jay Wright's No. 7 Wildcats (1-0), who advance to play host to the winner of George Washington and Boston University on Wednesday.

Villanova led by 11 at half and pulled away with a 14-5 run early in the second half. Wayns led six Wildcats in double figures. Four of Villanova's five starters reached double figures, with point guard Corey Stokes finishing with eight points.

The Wildcats out-rebounded the Red Foxes 41-23 in a dominant all-around performance. Villanova blocked seven shots, recorded seven steals and made 18-of-21 from the foul line.

Jay Bowie's 14 points led Marist, which shot just 27.3 percent from the field.
